Kücki Today

Editorial

Yet another newsletter, you may think.... I’ve decided to write you this newsletter, not because everybody does, not because it’s a modern means of communication. The real reason is: I want to share with you the exciting life on a lodge in the middle of one of the oldest deserts in the word, the Namib desert.

In this first edition I’ll tell you about our 6th Fly-In event, our new Rostock Campsite coming soon, and the new 10 well marked hiking trails we have just implemented. Enjoy reading!

Yours sincerely,

Kücki

30 Airplanes in the Namib Desert...

The 6th Fly-In, which was held on the 31st of May to the 1st of June on our Rostock Ritz “International Airport”, was again a big success.

30 airplanes, 8 from South Africa and 22 from Namibia, took part in this exciting event. 23 of the airplanes participated in the competition, which comprised as usual a navigational exercise – this year based on the well known book “The Sheltering Desert”, telling the adventures of Henno Martin and Hermann Korn – and “Spot Landings” and “Water Bomb Droppings”, which were accompanied by a loud crowd of excited spectators.

We are all looking forward for the next Fly-In, which will take place on the 5th and 6th of June 2009.

The Rostock Campsite

We will soon be opening our new campsite near to the Gaub Canyon. The location is in a convenient distance of 3 km from the C14 and 4km from the Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge, and has a “view for Africa”.

It comprises a big lapa sitting 30 with fireplace and panoramic view, and toilet and shower facilities. Pre-booking for big groups is essential. Campers are welcome to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the à la carte Restaurant of the Rostock Ritz Lodge.

10 New Hiking Trails at Rostock Ritz

Under the management of Prof. Gerald Kuhnt from the Institute of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology, University of Hanover, a total of 10 new well-marked hiking trails through the amazing Rostock landscapes have been implemented.

For each trail, GPS coordinates as well as geological features and flora have been recorded and put together in a nice booklet, available in English and German for all enthusiastic hikers.

You may bring your own GPS and transfer the hiking tracks to it, but you may as well borrow one of our GPS, specially available for you to guide your hike.

Introducing today: Trail 3 – Sunrise Walk

From the „Lion King“, with its spectacular view, you will find your way down to the sand filled plain (1). Hikers will now walk on little dunes which consist of reddish, fine sand which was blown in from the south.

The wind always dislocates the sand and you can clearly see the dune ripple marks. The grass in the dunes fixes the sand, it can not be blown away easily.

Be on edge for our next newsletter on october 1st, with the following topics: The Meerkat-Rescue Project, Introducing the Bushman-Paintings Hiking Trail, The 10th Anniversary of Rostock Ritz, and “How it comes our dog eats carrots?”

Did you know, that you have wireless internet connection at our lounge, bar and reception area, as well as at our pool?
